Are You Considering a Maltese Dog For Your Family?

The Maltese is a cute little toy dog that only stands about ten inches high. They normally weigh less than ten pounds and have coats of long, straight silky fur.

The Maltese is a very sweet little dog that was associated with aristocracy for many centuries. The breed was well known by the Italians, Greeks and, of course, those who lived on the Island of Malta.

Today people of all walks of life and all economic backgrounds own Maltese dogs. The natural disposition that has been bred into the dog is to feel very trusting and loyal toward his master. Maltese dogs have gentle temperaments with a lot of spirit. It is this second feature that many people find so endearing.

When you own a Maltese dog your natural inclination may be to pamper him --- but that is not a good idea. Too much pampering will make the Maltese overprotective to the point they may become jealous of anyone paying attention to their master. If you allow that to happen your little Maltese will soon be walking all over you and your family. Therefore it is important that your Maltese dog receive proper training. He needs to learn obedience and should be socialized with other people and other dogs.

Maltese dogs are perfect for small houses and apartments. Due to their diminutive size they do not mind living in small spaces. Like most dogs, they require exercise. However, they will get much of their exercise just running around indoors. Plan on taking your dog for two short walks each day and he should get all the outdoor exercise he needs.

Maltese dogs are sometimes more difficult to care for than they are to love! Their silky coats require daily brushing and regular attention should be given to their eyes. Why the eyes? Because the Maltese is prone to watery eyes that produce a sticky discharge in the lower corners that can stain their beautiful white coat. It is necessary to wipe any buildup in your dog's eyes regularly. This is one of the reasons you often see Maltese dogs with their hair tied up on top of their head. This keeps the hair out of their eyes.

Here is some good news: Maltese dogs don't shed. Their coats do get dirty, however, and will become matted unless brushed daily. If you buy a Maltese dog make sure you also buy a good brush, some doggie combs, dog shampoo and conditioners. --- and plan on using them regularly!

If you clip your little Maltese short, his coat will require daily combing. If left long, his coat will require brushing two or three times a day. He should be shampooed at least once a month and he should be treated to fairly regular trips to the groomer for trimming.

Your Maltese will be a great addition to your family. He loves people, will be tolerant of well behaved children and will get along fine with the other pets in your household. He's a real sweetheart!
