Is Fish Oil Good For Your Dog?


Fish oil is one of the supplements that is added to most pet foods. This is a practice that has been there for a long time and there are reasons why it is added. Omega-3 fats that are present in fish oil are known to cure some abnormalities that pets may develop. Research and studies has shown that this is the same for humans.

Pet owners are now using fish oil as a supplement because of its positive effects on the coat and the skin of their pets. Generally, supplementing you dog food with fish oil is a good thing and it has positive effects on the dog's health. However, there is the other side of it, too much of it may turn out to be harmful.


The anti-inflammatory quality of the fish oil produces chemical that will alter the platelet functions. Platelets are blood cells that are made in the bone marrow and they aid in the formation of blood clot in case of a body cut. Blood clotting is a body mechanism to help the body from bleeding a lot and a defensive mechanism again external infections.

Chemical produced by DHA and EPA reduce the rate of action of platelets to clotting. Most dogs that have had their food supplemented with excessive fish oil, tend to lose a lot of blood if injured. You should be very careful if your dog needs surgery.

Salmon Oil

The anti-inflammatory ability of DHA and EPA tend to interfere with the body ability to heal a wound. When a wound is noticed, inflammation send white cells to that body part and the wound healing may start. With anti-inflammatory property of these chemicals, they interfere with this important healing process.

This slows the body ability to heal a wound or replace the lost skin. Production of white blood cells happens at the first 5 days of injury. This is very important for dogs that are undertaking long surgical procedures. Chemical like DHA and EPA can interfere with the process.

Studies and research has been done to determine the right amounts of EPA and DHA that you can give your dog. Research institute are doing research for cats too. The recommended dose is 20-55mg of DHA and EPA per weight in pound. This dose is less than the dose administered in a condition where the benefits are more important that the resulting side effects.
