The Number 1 Reason Dogs Are Killed Each Year

Actually there are 2 #1 reasons why dogs are killed each year and this article is going to tell you all about both of them.

The first #1 reason so many dogs die each year is from a lack of training from their owners. Yep, you have probably seen it. A family buys a pup and it starts getting bigger and bigger but nobody takes the time to do any training. I think some of these owners think that the dog will figure out what is right and what is wrong on it's own.

We all know that does not happen. ALL dogs need training, big ones as well as little ones will benefit from knowing the rules of the house. The next thing you know the dog is knocking the kids down and chewing up all the furniture so now the family decides to get rid of the dog and it ends up in a shelter.

And here is the worst part give them a couple of months and they do it all again.

Not training your dog increases its chances of ending up in a shelter and being put to sleep.

Here is the next #1 reason dogs end up dying and I have seen it happen over and over again. It actually has 2 versions but they both have the same ending.

A new dog owner feels the need to take their puppy or dog outside without a leash. The dog spots a rabbit or another dog across the street and darts into the street in pursuit of that fun creature. You can guess the ending. Yes here comes a car and hits the dog. How sad and what a sad mistake that allowed it to happen.

Never take your dog out in an unprotected area without a leash.

Again I have seen this happen many times over the years. You open the door and the dog darts out and into the street. You know how it ends. I have clients that say the kids go out and the dog sneaks past them. Then fix up a latch on the door that the kids can not reach so they have to call you to get out while you hold the dog.

Of course, training your dog to NEVER cross the threshold of the door until you give a special command is very useful. However, in the meantime make sure somebody is holding the dog when the door is opened.
