The Number One Reason Why Dogs Die

I can imagine that there's nothing worse than seeing your dog run out into the street and being hit by a car and dying before your eyes. It has to be a very traumatic experience. However that scene plays out over and over again daily all over the country. Here are a few tips to keep it from happening to you.

How did the dog get out in the street? You'd be amazed at how many times this happens to very caring dog owners. Let me give you a few examples about how it might happen.

1. Somebody opens the door and the dog runs out.

2. You are playing with your dog in an unprotected environment with no leash.

3. Your dog charges after a rabbit or squirrel and the leash got away from you.

4. Your dog's collar was too loose; it backed out of the collar and ran into the street.

5. the dog learned how to open the gate from the backyard and you had not fixed it yet.

Okay, the list can go on and on but I think you get the idea. The sad part is that all these things are fixable and there was no reason for the dog to die. Let me explain to you what I mean.

Let's start off with number one. If the dog had been taught manners at the door where it had to sit and stay until invited out the door this would never have happened. This exercise is so easy to teach your dog if you'll just take the time to do it.

On item number two, you should never play with your dog off leash in an unprotected environment. I know the dog is good most of the time however they are dogs and they are not perfect all the time.

With item number three the dog charges after a critter and rips the leash right out of your hand. When you stop and think about it the critter could have been what happened on item number two as well. No ifs, ands or buts this was not the first time your dog has charged after a squirrel or rabbit so you need to make sure you have the dog under control and a good grip on the leash.

Number four is one of my real pet peeves. So many people have a tendency of wanting to take their dog for a walk with a collar that is so loose it will come right off of the dogs head. That is very dangerous and it's the reason for many dog deaths annually. It's so easy to adjust the collar correctly so that it's tight enough that it can't come over the dog's head however you can still put two fingers between the dog's neck and the collar. Adjusting the collar correctly just might save your dog's life.

Quite often I come across dogs that have learned how to open up the gate to the backyard and let themselves out. In fact sometimes they even can open up the door in the house when it's a lever type handle. It's a simple fix folks. On that gate to the backyard put a chain if you need to, to make it safe. On the exterior door of the house change the handle to a round type handle where the dog can not open it.

As you can see all these things were easy to fix you just need to pay attention and keep your dog safe. Hopefully one of these tips might save your dog's life.
