Things You Need to Know To Survive Your Puppy

When I talk about surviving your puppy I am talking about what you need to know to survive and co-exist with a puppy between the ages of 8 and 16 weeks. This can be a very exhausting and trying time for a new dog owner.

During this period there is the excitement of a new family member and the agony, like getting up in the middle of the night to take the newest family member out to do its business.

Hopefully this article will give you some things to consider and make this period with your dog just a little bit easier for both of you.

1. House training - yes this is job #1 at this point in your new dog's life. Forget about puppy pads, they just don't work. Instead use the crate training method. Make sure you get the correct crate. It should be big enough for your dog to stand up, turn around and lay down and that is all, no bigger.
2. Crate - make sure you get the right one. No wire cages, you want the plastic type crate that is more of a den like place for your dog. Dogs are den animals and your new friend will learn to love his den.

3. Biting - all puppies do it and it can be very annoying as well as painful. Get some Grannicks Bitter Apple and spray it on yourself when the dog feels a need to chew on your hands for example. The dog learns that you don't taste good and simply quits. This product does not stain anything and is safe to use.

4. Sleep - as an 8 week old pup your new friend needs plenty of sleep and does not need to be carried all of the time. Babies and puppies also need to sleep to be healthy and happy.

5. Exercise - as your puppy gets older exercise is important to keep the little guy happy and calm. Play retrieve games but never tug-of-war. Walks are also a great way to get exercise for both of you.

Getting through those first 2 months can be tough for some people. In fact believe it or not some people actually find a new home for their dog during this period because it becomes too much.

If things seem like they are simply too much to handle make a call and find a trainer that can help you get through this rough period.

Stop My Puppy From Biting My Hands

There is nothing more exciting or as much fun as getting a new puppy. However along with the excitement comes some things that are not as much fun. Yes it is a fact that having your puppy biting at your hands, arms and feet is really annoying and also painful. Let's talk about what you can do to eliminate the problem before you are scared for life.

Yes, those little teeth are sometimes described as being as sharp as needles and as painful as razor blades. I have had clients whose hands and arms have literally been cut, scratched and scared.

So now, how do we solve this problem? You have probably been given solutions by your vet, friends, family and you have even read some solutions on the internet or in books. Did they work? I guess not because you wouldn't be reading this article if the problem has already been eliminated.

You may be like a recent person that said her little 10 week old puppy was biting her in the face and doing the same to her kids. Do you see what the problem is here? Why do they have their faces down to the puppies level? If you give a puppy an opportunity it will take advantage of the situation. So keep your face up and away from the pup.

You have probably been told that when your dog bites at you give it one of it's toys. Did that work? I bet it did for a minute but then it is right back to you. It's almost as if you tasted good.

IDEA!!!

Let's fix it so you don't taste good. Do you bite on food that tastes bad? Absolutely not. Well either will your puppy. Are you ready for the secret to solve the puppy biting problem? Here it is.

GRANNICKS BITTER APPLE
Grannick Bitter Apple

For those of you that say I tried bitter apple and it didn't work. I can assure you that you didn't use the GRANNICKS brand or you didn't use it correctly.

Buy the small bottle so you can keep it with you easily in your pocket or close to wherever you are with the dog. When it mouths or bites at your hand, grab the bottle without saying a word. Spray a generous amount on your hand and give it back to the dog. You will see that look of disgust on it's face. It is saying "oh my gosh why do you taste so bad".

This is such and easy no confrontation type of trick to keep your dog from biting you. You can use the spray wherever you need it, even on your shoes or your legs.

I have never seen a dog go past one bottle of GRANNICKS before this painful behavior disappeared forever. Get a bottle at any pet store and give it a try.

Stop My Dog From Chewing Everything

This is really easy to do so let's get started. Chewing starts early and if you allow it to happen as a puppy it will continue into adulthood. This article will tell you how to keep it from happening if you have a puppy and also how to stop this bad habit if you have an adult dog.

Let's start with puppies. Puppies chew and they especially do it when they are teething at the 4 - 5 month old period. Eliminating chewing is much easier to do when you have a puppy because you can eliminate it before it becomes a big problem and a bad habit.

Puppies that are chewing the furniture and the molding on the walls are dogs that just seem to have to much free time where they are not under your direct constant supervision. So here is the fix and it is really easy. Limit where your puppy can be by only allowing it to be in 2 different places when it is in the house.

· In the crate

· In front of you

Now here is an extra added benefit. Using this same technique will also get a potty trained dog. If your puppy is in the crate it simply is unable to chew your furniture. The last item "in front of you" is really important.

Take the puppies leash and attach it to your belt, that way where ever you go the puppy must come with you. If it is with you it can't be under the kitchen table chewing on the legs.

If you will follow these simple rules you will find that your pup never develops that nasty chewing habit.

But what if you have an older do that is chewing on everything? This was a dog that didn't have the chewing eliminated as a puppy and now has the habit. I tell people when you have a 10 month old puppy that is chewing, you will have a 10 year old dog that is chewing unless you fix it.

It really is not that difficult. The steps are very similar to the steps above and include the part about never leaving the dog unattended even for a short period of time. If you will follow these simple guidelines your dogs chewing habit should go away usually within 4 - 6 weeks.
Grannick Bitter Apple

Now here is a little secret that can give you some extra help. There is a product available called Grannicks Bitter Apple. You want the gel and not the spray. It can be difficult to find sometimes in pet stores however it is easy to get online, do a Google search and you will find it for as little as $6.29 a bottle.

Simply take some gel and apply it to the hard surfaces that you dog chews, it will quickly learn to stay away because it tastes bad. When the chewing is gone you simply wipe up the gel.

Give these techniques a try, they are easy to implement and they will give some quick results.

How To Teach Your Puppy Not to Bite

As a dog trainer that helps people train their problem dog's one of the things I hear most often with puppies is how do we get the biting to stop. As cute as those little puppies are their teeth are like little tiny razor blades and they hurt. I'm going to teach you a way to eliminate the biting problem without any confrontation.

Before I tell you how to eliminate the biting I'm going to tell you some ways that don't work. I'm doing this so you won't waste your time.

The first method that doesn't work is reacting negatively when the puppy bites, in other words letting out a little ouch when the puppy bites you.

The next one is praising your puppy when you tell them no. You will be saying no for ever before the biting stops.

The last one I am going to talk about today is giving him a toy when he bites you, in other words substituting the toy for your hand or fingers. These methods sound good, but are not effective.

Grannicks Bitter Apple
Okay now let's get down to business and let me tell you the method that does work. You want to go to the local pet store and buy a small bottle of a product called Grannicks Bitter Apple. This stuff is fantastic. Now let me warn you there are a lot of other bitter apple products out there that do not work. So make sure you get Grannicks, it's available at all the major pet stores.

Now how do we use it? Simple, let me tell you how. You're going to keep the bottle with you, that's why we bought the small one which is easy to carry around in your pocket.

When your puppy starts mouthing on you you're going to simply reach over and grab your bottle of bitter apple and spray it all over your hand. Your hand should be dripping wet. Then give your hand back to the puppy and watch his face, because he won't like it.

Okay here's another example. You are eating breakfast this morning and all of a sudden you realize your puppies chewing on your shoelaces, no problem. Reach over and grab your bottle of bitter apple and spray some on your shoe laces and give them back to the dog.

This method is so simple and so effective that I've never seen a puppy go past one bottle of Granniks Bitter Apple. In other words before that bottle of bitter apple is gone your dog will have stopped chewing on you, your shoes, and even your jeans. It simply learns that these things don't taste good.

This is such a simple way to teach your puppy not to bite without any confrontation but before I finish I wanted tell you one last thing. Bitter apple contains a lot of alcohol and it evaporates very quickly. So you may have sprayed your hand 30 minutes ago but now it's evaporated and the puppy may come back for another bite. If he does simply spray again and keep in mind that when it evaporates it doesn't have the same punch so simply reapply.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy this simple trick to eliminate puppy biting.

Dog Behaviour Tips - What to Do About Excessive Licking

If your dog annoys you with licking, you should take some steps to eliminate this habit. There are some people who enjoy having their dog lick them. However, the majority of us would prefer if our dog would keep it's tongue to itself. So you need to do some things to correct this annoying behavior.

Tips to prevent the licking

You should use a firm correction 'no' immediately after the dog licks you or any other person. Unless there is a correction, the dog will not understand that this is an unwanted behavior and will simply continue. For some dogs making a loud noise will correct the problem.

Interrupt the licking process

If the dog doesn't respond to your reprimands while licking, you should take other measures. You can start of with something the dog knows, for example a sit-stay exercise for a few minutes.. As soon as the command is obeyed by your dog, you can reward the dog with plenty of verbal praise. This just gives it something else to do.

Support from friends and family members

Not licking you also means not licking anybody else. You should let friends and family members understand that you are training your dog in a serious way to stop the licking. They should not encourage, allow or tolerate the licking either.

The sure fire method
Grannick's Bitter Apple
OK, I saved the best for last. This is a method I have been using with my clients for the last 8 or 9 years. I use a product called Grannicks Bitter Apple. Pay attention to the brand name because there are several different brands that just don't work as well. You can buy Grannicks at just about any pet store.

The key is to keep the bottle on you or with you for the next few days. When the dog comes up and licks your hand, without saying a word simply grab the bottle and spray you hand. Really soak it and then give it back to the dog. The dog says "wow, you don't taste good anymore". Do this for the next couple of days and you will love the results.

This product is great, it doesn't stain and is not harmful to you so you can use it anywhere.

I have never seen a dog that didn't quit the licking before the first bottle of Grannicks is gone.

Good luck...
