Tips for Choosing the Right Dog Toys for Your Pet

One of the many joys of owning a pet dog is that you can have hours of fun playing together, especially outdoors as many dogs are big fans of playing, running and chasing outside. To get the most enjoyment out of these times spent with your pet, selecting the right dog toy is absolutely essential.

Nylabone Puppy Toy Starter Pack,

Whilst many puppy starter packs will include toys for your dog to start off playing with, as your dog grows it can be harder to find something that suits their playing preferences and their personality. Here are some top tips for deciding on the best dog toys online to buy for your canine companion.

Firstly, you will need to consider the playing style of your dog. It could be that he or she likes to chase, to chew or even to cuddle his or her toys. There is a toy suitable for all these different play styles, and this should be your top consideration when selecting something for your pet.

Wobble Wag Giggle Ball

For those that like to chase, balls are the perfect option, and indeed they are possibly the most widely bought and used choice out of all the dog toys on the market today. You can also choose from other options which include flying discs, which many dogs like leaping into the air to catch.

Nylabone Dog Chew Toy

For dogs that enjoy chewing their toys, toys such as rubber and rope chew toys are perfect, and can even be beneficial for gums and teeth. These can wear down quickly due to heavy use, so you might want to invest in a few of these for your pet if they enjoy playing with this type of toy a lot.
Snuggling Toy

Perhaps rarer are the pet dogs that enjoy carrying and cuddling their toys, but many indeed like snuggling up to a plush toy and transporting it around with them. Some of these toys may also have sound effects which can make them more interesting and appealing to your pets.

If you are looking for dog toys online or offline, after considering your dog's play style it is a good idea to make sure that the items are absolutely safe to use for your dog. There are several factors to take into consideration here, including ensuring that they are made from natural and non-toxic materials where possible, especially when used as chew toys.

You should also take care to remove parts which can cause harm to your dog - such as bits of ribbon or string, or even beads - which your pet can swallow and potentially choke on. You should also make sure that the toy itself is not too small for your dog, so that he or she does not choke upon it.

It is important to throw away toys as they become damaged and very soiled, as sharp edges or accumulated grime can pose a threat to your dog's health. Make sure that you keep an eye on the quality and condition of the toys so that you have replacements waiting in the wings for when it is time for a change.

There are many different dog toys online and offline for purchase, and your choice will all depend on your dog's preferences and how safe the toys are to use. With that said, many experts recommend keeping a number of different toys around, as dogs like to play with many different types of toy in order to be fully stimulated in their play.
Boomer Ball

If you are at all unsure about the right toy for your pet, do not hesitate to ask for the opinion of your retailer, as they will likely be able to give you some very good advice on the right products for you and your canine friend.

Five Tips for Dealing With Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Separation anxiety is a fairly common problem for today's modern dog. There are many factors that contribute to this specific form of anxiety, and it is an issue that typically takes a lot of persistence in fully resolving. If your dog is suffering from moderate to severe separation anxiety, I would strongly advise you to seek the help of a professional. For mild cases, or for the sake of prevention, here are some tips to help ease the symptoms of this problem.

1. No big hellos or goodbyes. Don't make a fuss about leaving or coming home, it should be the most uneventful part of your dog's day. When leaving the house, don't get caught up in long, emotional goodbyes to your dog. If possible, don't even say anything, just casually leave like it's no big deal... because it's not! When returning home, resist the urge to give in to your dog's excitement to see you. Wait until your dog has calmed down to greet him and give him attention/affection.

2. Exercise. A tired dog is far less likely to exhibit behavioral issues. Make sure that your pup gets plenty of exercise in the morning before you leave for the day. Lack of exercise contributes to a build-up of energy in the dog which is easily channeled into anxiety, frustration, nervousness and even panic if not given the proper outlet.

3. Mental stimulation. Dog's get bored too! Often times, destructive behavior is simply due to a lack of mental stimulation. If you don't provide your dog with any activities to do in your absence, she may be forced to find her own! Best not to leave it up to chance. Leave plenty of fun and engaging activities for her while you are out. Frozen kongs, smart toys and chew toys are all great options. You can even make a game of it by leaving little treats hidden around the house. When you leave, tell your dog to "Go find" (after teaching the cue, of course) and let her off on a fun and delicious scavenger hunt.

4. Dog-proof the home. This is important for dogs of any age, but particularly for younger dogs and puppies. There are all kinds of enticing things waiting to be explored in your house, but many of these things could potentially be dangerous to your dog. Before leaving your dog alone with the run of the house, make sure to dog-proof. A great way to do this is to get on your hands and knees at dog level and get a dog's eye view of your home. Anything that looks like it could be chewed, tugged at, pawed at, sniffed in or curled up on should be safe for Fido to interact with. If leaving your dog in a crate, be sure that there are no wires, cords or cables within paws-reach of the crate.

5. Cultivate confidence and independence. A great way to prevent any kind of separation anxiety in the first place is to cultivate a sense of confidence and independence in your dog. Of course, we don't want a dog that is too independent and doesn't listen to us, but we don't want a dog on the other end of that spectrum either. Dogs that are overly coddled and sheltered can quickly develop such a strong attachment to their owner that they fear being alone. Avoid this by resisting the urge to coddle. You can also practice confidence-building exercises with your dog, and be sure to give your dog plenty of socialization and exposure to the outside world.

5 Essential Tricks to Keeping Your Dog's Teeth Healthy

Your furry friend's teeth are as important as any part of his body when it comes to grooming. Just like us, bacteria will build up inside the mouth without regular brushing which in turn may lead to gum problems and irritation, plaque and other infections. Veterinarians recommend that you brush your dog's teeth daily to keep them strong and healthy.

Aside from regular brushing, here are other tricks to keep your furry friend's chompers at their best shape:

Give good quality food

What we eat greatly affects our general health. Whether we eat junk or nutritious food, it will reflect in our body. The same goes with our pets. It is important to feed them good, quality food made out of fruits, vegetables and meats. Good food will nourish the body, including the teeth. Stay away from by-products, cereal grains and meals as they are more likely to stick to your pet's teeth.

Offer healthy snacks

If you're feeding your furry friend nutritious food, go all out and make them snack healthy as well. A lot of dog snacks contain high amounts of cereal grain, fats and sugar which can affect your pet's teeth negatively. Opt for nutritious snacks like apple slices, carrot sticks or a chunk of squash.

Use dental treats
Dental Treats
If there's one thing that a dog loves, it is a treat! Hit two birds with one stone by using dog dental treats to reward your pet's good behavior - they are designed to help clean your dog's mouth, freshen their breath and to remove the build-up of plaque. Try a variety of these dental treats and find out which ones your furry friend loves best.

Use raw bones instead of commercial chew bones

Large uncooked bones (preferably cow bones) are ideal for your dog to chew on as they help clean and strengthen the teeth. It is important not to give small and cooked bones as toys as they can break and injure the mouth. Your dog can also choke on them. Also stay away from commercial chew bones that contain starch which is sticky and can leave residues on your pet's chompers.

Purchase chew toys
Chew Toy

Good quality nylon or hard rubber chew toys are ideal for cleaning and scraping dog teeth. Regular chewing can also strengthen your pet's teeth. At the same time, they're having fun!

For best results, it is always best to consult with your veterinarian if you want to know more about keeping your dog's mouth healthy!

Dog Teeth Dental Care Tips - How A Dog Toothbrush, If Used Right, Can Help You Avoid Costly Vet Fees

Dog Teeth: It's hard to listen to dog owners who brag about the amount of money their dog cost them to buy, and how, he or she was worth every penny because they're so loyal and faithful. Well, this goes both ways. You need to be loyal to your pooch also. Every dog has its own value that's why we have them as pets, so forget money because it makes your dog no better than the mongrel next door.

Dogs need attention in lots of ways, and a walk in the park or pat on the back for being a good dog is not enough. Pet dogs need monitoring regularly by their owners so they stay healthy and strong. To protect a dog's teeth and gums you have to be on top of this. Just as the same goes for a dog's nails, eyes, ears, paws, coat and other.

Conditions such as a toothache, mouth infection, eye irritation, gut disorders even nail fungus is common problems for a dog, and, something that can be spotted early if a dog is given the once over every so often. The earlier something is detected will save the dog from unnecessary stress, and save your pocket too from high vet fees. Dental care treatment can prove expensive, so much so, some people ask their bank manager for a loan. Avoid this happening to you by looking after your dog's teeth and gums. Regardless of shape or size do a regular maintenance check on your dog. Look for mouth ulcers, red gums and decayed molars.

Dog Dental Care Tips:

1. Best time to start cleaning the teeth is when they're a pup. The earlier they're introduced to the toothbrush the better they become at accepting it.

2. It's a new experience for the small dog, so allow the pup to familiarize him or herself with the situation.

3. Don't rush the process and be patient. Puppies are playful but persevere till the job is done. You might have to be firm and coax the pup sometimes but stick with it.

4. Use toothpaste developed specially for puppies. Use their toothbrush and no one else's. Cover the bristles of the brush with toothpaste. Gently pull open the puppy's lip with one hand while holding their muzzle with the other. Again using gentle strokes, brush along the gum line but not with force, but with enough power to get the job done, working from the back of the mouth to the front.

Other:

· Canine teeth like humans also suffer from plaque. Keep a supply of chew toys for the puppy to nibble as this will help scrape off excess plaque.

· Some oral complications can kill a dog. Infection caused by a rotten tooth can spread to body organs such as the liver.

· There is no difference between human Gingivitis and dog Gingivitis as it amounts to the same thing, pain and possible disease? Untreated Gingivitis can bring periodontal disease, which is irreversible. Periodontal disease is a series of changes associated with inflammation and the loss of the deep supporting structures of teeth.

· Remember to smell your dog's breath. If a dog develops bad breath it could be a sign of an underlying condition. Diet too can cause a smelly breath. Keep a record of what the dog eats and remove culprit foods from its diet.

· Difficult to chew or swallow foods mince up, as these can build up in their mouth

· Sugary foods take extra care with

Look after your dog's teeth because after all, he is man's best friend.

Why Your Dog Needs Toys

So you're getting ready to bring home a new puppy or dog and you want to make sure you have everything your new pal will need. You have picked out the perfect collar and chosen the right kind of leash. You have a crate and a bed for the pup, and his own special bowls. The only other thing your pooch will need is toys. How do you know what to buy? What is best for puppies? Should you get hard chew toys or soft, squeaky toys? If you've been in the local pet store, you'll know there are tons of things to choose from. This may not seem like a very important decision, but in fact, having toys for your puppy or dog is crucial to his health and development.

Toys and chews provide a puppy or dog the ability to enjoy something that is natural for them. Make sure your pup knows which things are his to chew on, or he will go look for something on his own. Toys and bones provide an outlet for a dog to release pent up energy or relieve boredom. Chewing is good for their teeth and jaws, as well as being a good stress reliever.
Teething Toy

The types of toys you will need to buy will depend on several things. Puppies are teething and as their permanent teeth come in, they will lose the puppy teeth. Toys for a small or medium breed puppy or a small breed dog need to be small enough for the dog to carry around and small enough for them to get their mouth on it. A large breed puppy can be bigger than a small breed full grown. There are toys and chew designed specifically for puppies or small breeds and toys for large breed, powerful chewers.

Another thing to consider is what type of toys will your dog need. Should you buy bones, or balls or rawhide or squeaky toys? Once you decide what is the best size for your puppy or dog, consider
how he or she will play with the toys. You should provide a variety of toys. A ball or a tug toy is great for playing with your dog. An appropriate size bone is good for your dog to keep himself occupied. Most dog experts recommend some type of puzzle toy where the pup has to figure out and work the toy to get a treat stashed inside. Many puppies, and even older dogs like to have a soft, stuffed animal toy. It becomes a comforting toy and they will not chew it or tear it up. My 3 Dobermans and probably other large breeds, like to tear apart anything like that, so we have no stuffed toys in my house!

Always keep an eye on your pup and his toys. Be aware if they are broken or torn in pieces and throw them out as needed, to prevent him or her from swallowing something that could obstruct the esophogus or intestines. Rawhides and certain other chews can cause problems for some puppies and dogs so always ask your veterinarian for his advice and recommendation.

Understanding How To Keep Your Dog Happy

Your dog relies upon you for care and feeding. You'll want to give your dog the best possible care and the highest quality food that you can afford.

Give your dog love, care and devotion. Take time every day to spend time with your dog. Pet him, take him for walks and give him a lot of affection.

Your dog will respond in kind. He will give you love and affection back. Dogs want to be a part of the family and a loved and treasured family member.

Your dog will need play time, walking time and rest time. He will love a day with plenty of exercise so get him a few toys and teach him how to play with them.

A good game of fetch or tug of war should be ideal for getting things started. After play time he will need a small snack so have a few dog treats handy to give him.

Go into some rest time and take an afternoon siesta before the evening meal. An after dinner a walk will round thing out nicely.

When you treat a dog with plenty of love and affection you'll be given love and affection in return. Your dog wants to please you and given the opportunity, he will.

When dogs are puppies it can be more challenging to keep him happy. Puppies seem to have boundless energy so it's important to have plenty of activity to keep him going until he is worn out.

Put your favorite shoes, your slippers and anything leather such as purses, camera bags and the like up out of reach. Your puppy will require some special chew toys so that he won't be tempted to nibble on your more valuable things.

Keep him busy, walk him often, give him time to play with the kids and take a nice walk. Be sure to allow him some sniffing time, dogs have a thing about sniffing where other dogs have been and it's part of his learning to sniff and smell things.

Avoid locking the dog up in the house all day, dogs require some attention and it's not fair to the dog. Also, avoid keeping the dog on a chain all day long, it's not fair to the dog either. If you're going to be gone a lot, consider a dog sitter, a dog run or a pet care center for your beloved pet.

Are Antlers Good Chew Toys For Dogs?

Most pet owners can tell you that if your dog is not given chew toys, they will chew on whatever they can find. Dog's teeth, just like humans need something to chew on to relieve pain and to sharpen their canine teeth. There are many different options on the market today for chew toys, but all natural is decidedly better for your dog. Antlers have proven to be a healthy alternative to bones, but still have the same dietary benefits that bones do.

What Types of Antlers are there?

There are a few different types of deer antlers on the market for dogs. The type you get is usually according to the store that you buy the antlers from. Since the white tailed deer is the one most often seen in the United States, this species are where most antlers come from. It is possible to find moose, elk, or mule deer antlers in some parts of the country, however.

Antlers or Bones?

The only big difference between antlers and the larger bones that many dogs chew is that the antlers are softer. It is worth noting however, that bones and antlers can chip a dogs teeth, if the dog is aggressive with its chewing. You want to be careful and watch your pup closely if they are aggressive chewers, so that you can stop them.

Rawhide or Antlers?
Elk Antlers For Dogs

There is a debate over whether rawhide or antlers are better for dogs as chew toys as well. It seems that deer antlers come out on top, because rawhide is softer and the dog chews it up in no time at all. Since rawhide is so soft, it is possible that the dog will swallow whole pieces of it, which can cause a blockage in their intestines later on. It is also said that antlers have a higher protein content than rawhide does as well.

Where can You Find Deer Antlers?

These types of chew toys are sold often online, in feed stores, and at co-ops. It is also possible to get them from deer sheds in some areas.

These are just a few of the reasons that deer antlers can make good chew toys for your pup. They have been proven to be better for your pup than rawhide or bones and keep dogs from chewing up the furniture and your favorite pair of shoes as well. You can find deer antlers at any of the places above for your pooch today.

What Type of Chew Toys Are Best For My Dog

If you browse through a pet store or look online at pet suppliers you'll find that there's an enormous variety of chew toys available for dogs. You may feel like throwing up your hands and giving up! Which ones should you get for your dog? How should you decide what chew toys your dog would like?

Different dogs will have different preferences when it comes to chew toys but, thankfully, they aren't that hard to please. But there are also a few guidelines you can take into account when choosing chew toys for your dog. Here are some tips to help you choose the best chewies for your dog.

Before buying a chew toy for your dog, consider his age. Young puppies will prefer something different to chew on than older puppies and they will both like something different from older dogs.

Nylabone Puppy Chew

Young puppies will be teething which means that they will be trying to chew on everything! Get them a wide assortment of (relatively) inexpensive chew toys that they can chomp on. You may be surprised to learn that they will appreciate soft things to chew as well as hard things so get them some fleece toys as well as a few harder toys. Make sure the toys are appropriate for their size and that they can't swallow any of the parts. Toys should always be too big to fit down your puppy or dog's throat.

Older puppies will appreciate some harder toys. They are more likely to take toys outside so rough 'n tumble toys are a good
Kong Tug Toy
choice. Think "durable." If you have more than one dog then rope toys and other toys that can stand some tugging are a good idea. Your older puppy will likely de-stuff any stuffed toys quickly so look for toys that can stand up to some rough play. Older puppies like to stalk, hunt and kill their toys. They are practicing being big dogs and their chew toys are their victims, so give them toys they can really have a good time with.

Avoid any balls or other toys that your puppy could get in his mouth and possibly choke on.

Adult dogs will enjoy chewing again so get them chew toys that they can relax with and chew on a long time such as big rawhides. Always make sure that the rawhides are too big for them to get all the way in their mouths. Otherwise they may choke. It's best if you are present to observe your dog when he's chewing in case of any problems. Older dogs may enjoy stuffed toys again and may have a favorite toy they like to carry around or sleep with.

You can give your dog bones to chew on but only if they are raw bones. Do not give your dog cooked bones since they are prone to splintering. Splintered bones are a danger since they can puncture your dog's stomach or intestines and put his life at risk. Raw bones are much softer and don't splinter.
