The First Night Your Puppy Is At Home

For anyone who's ever known the joy and anticipation of waiting to bring a new puppy home, you know what it's like when you finally bring your prize home. The first night your puppy is at home with you is loaded with excitement. That's why it's best to plan ahead so both you and your puppy can have the best first night together possible.

Before you bring your puppy home make sure that you have all of the basic things that he'll need to settle into your home. These things should include the same kind of food that he's used to eating (you can make any changes to his diet slowly, later). He'll need a food dish and a water dish. Most puppies are very thirsty when they're excited so make sure that you keep his water bowl filled.

Your puppy will also need a bed, a crate or some other place to sleep. It's usually a good idea to place this bed close to your own bed, especially for the first few nights. This can reduce crying and whining while your puppy is feeling lonely and getting used to his new home.

Your puppy will also need a collar and leash if he doesn't already have one. Make sure that the collar fits properly. You should be able to slip two fingers between the collar and your puppy's neck. A collar that's too big or too small won't be any use to you or your puppy. Most people choose an inexpensive collar for a young puppy since he'll quickly outgrow it and need a larger one.
When you bring your puppy home with you for that first night you should try to keep things nice and calm. Your puppy will likely be very excited but he may also be scared. This is normal. He's moving from the home he's always known and from his family to live in a new place with new people. Give him time to get adjusted.

Make sure that you personally take your puppy outside to potty frequently. Show him where he's supposed to go and praise him lots when he goes there. He will probably not be housetrained if he's young so expect some accidents and don't yell at him. You can start on a housetraining plan right away by watching him for signs that he needs to go outside and taking him out.

It's fine to play with your puppy and give him lots of cuddles. Most puppies will enjoy this interaction and it will help your bonding with them. However, do watch and see when your puppy starts to get tired. Puppies play a lot but they also sleep a lot. When your puppy is tired you should let him sleep without trying to make him play more.

The excitement of the first day in a new home, with new people, will probably make your puppy very tired on this first night, so he may fall asleep early. This means that he'll be up bright and early the next morning so you should be prepared to get up when he does. You'll need to start your days early when you have a puppy! Get up and take him outside to potty as soon as he wakes up. Puppies have tons of energy and you'll need to keep up with your puppy for the next few months as he plays and grows.
