Are Pugs a Good Choice For Families With Small Children?

No family feels complete without a dog, but what do your children need to know to make certain that having a Pug, will be the best pet for your family? Children need to learn to make sure the dog has plenty of food and fresh water on a daily basis, receives adequate exercise, gets let outside at regular intervals, is treated kindly and does not have access to things they can chew up and ingest. This article is going to explain in detail how your children can learn to mix well with a Pug.

Water and Food:

Every dog needs access to fresh food and water on a daily basis, once your child has learned this, they can help take care of the family pet. Teaching children that a dog needs the right nutrition to grow big and strong, is a great way to teach them the importance of the dogs diet. This talk can be brought up when you are explaining why its important for children to eat their vegetables.

Getting Enough Exercise:

Another factor in keeping your Pug happy and healthy is to make sure he or she gets enough exercise. A dog needs to have regular exercise to help them stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A game of fetch with a ball or Frisbee is a classic and a good way to get those little feet moving. Explain to your children that just like a human being, mans best friend needs to stay in shape too.

Outside Breaks:

This is a big part of the responsibility of owning a dog and will not go unnoticed if a someone lets it slide. Explain to children that it is important the dog is let outside to go to the bathroom and it will help them gain a sense of responsibility. A child will come to notice that some things have to be done consistently, and cannot be put off while picking up another skill that will assist them in becoming more independent when it comes to taking care of the family dog.

Playing Nicely:

You need to be extremely gentle with your pets because you do not have any idea how the dog is going to respond, especially a new environment. You should talk to your children about playing nicely and then illustrate this behavior to them. Children are natural mimics and once you show them how you treat a Pug, they will learn how to be gentle from you.

Chewy Dog Toys:

This is a great chance for children to learn about picking up their toys. Pugs cannot always tell the difference between a new chew toy and a child's toy. An honest and frank talk with the children about what can happen when they leave their toys laying around might help you keep the house a bit more tidy, if only because the children do not want the dog chewing up their favorite toys.

The sooner a child learns about the responsibility that comes along with owning a dog, the better the situation will be. They must learn to feed the dog and give it water every day, take the dog for a walk, let it outside regularly, give it adequate attention and provide it with access to toys that are safe to chew on. Teaching children all about these responsibilities will allow them to learn a lot from owning a Pug.

Five Ways To Keep Your Older Dog In Good Health

You love your dog and naturally want him to be healthy and carefree in his golden years, just as he's always been. To make sure of this, follow these five tips:

A High Quality Diet

Your senior dog needs a good food that's high in nutrients, but likely lower in calories. Unless your older dog is very active, ask your vet about a food suitable for senior dogs who may not be as rambunctious as they once were. While it's very important he eats a well-balanced diet, the food you fed him in his younger years may not be the most appropriate now.

Regular Exercise

Of course, your senior dog isn't going to be jumping through hoops and chasing toys the way he once did, but he still needs regular exercise. A nice walk two or three times a day should do it, so stroll around the block a few times with him first thing in the morning, midday if your work schedule allows and definitely after dinner. These walks won't just be healthy for your dog, they'll also be good for you and whomever else brings him out for walks.

Maintaining A Healthy Weight

Too many people make excuses for their dog's weight, particularly as they age. This can lead to a number of health related complications if you're not careful. Be honest about what's going on with your older dog and listed to what your vet tells you about an ideal weight. If the dog is slow to get up, reluctant to exercise and expanding in his roundness at the same time, consider putting him on a restricted calorie diet. Since he is older, though, you need to follow more careful health guidelines.

Great Dental Care

Just like people, dogs need extra care of their teeth as they age. Offer your dog low-calorie chews that can help remover tartar build up on his teeth, or cookies that are specially designed to clean a dog's teeth. Consider a toothbrush, if you're brave and the pooch is tolerant - it can go a long way in preventing dental problems.

Annual Checkups

Even if your older dog appears to be in good health, make sure you take him to the vet on a yearly basis. The vet will evaluate his general health, weight, dental situation and other issues you may have missed or not be qualified to diagnose.

Your dog will live a longer, healthier life when you take good care of him. As he gets older, this is more important than ever.

Good Health For Your Dog

People who take care of dogs are responsible for making sure their pet is as healthy as possible. This is not always as easy to do as you might hope. Animals do not speak about their discomfort and will go out of their way to hide the pain. Additionally, there is not always a lot of easy to understand information regarding what they need.

However, there are some things that are absolutely easy to comprehend and carry out when it comes to your canine companion. One of those is the importance of regular exercise. Animals need to move around. In the wild, their wild relatives are on the move much of their waking hours. While your dog does not need to roam the land for food, they do still need that movement.

There are a few things that you can do to help make sure that your dog gets all of the activity needed for a long and healthy life. One of them is to take your animal for long walks regularly. The size and health of your dog will determine what is a long or short walk. However, the length of time it takes for a dog to do it's business is not really exercise.

Your dog needs to feel strong but tired when done with the walk. If you are going to walk when it is hot or you will be out for long, make sure that your dog will have access to water. If there are not sources on your route, take along water for your animal. You do not want your pet to become dehydrated in the name of health.

You can also spend time playing fetch or tug with your dog on a regular basis. You can do this if you are in or out, depending upon the size of your dog and the area you have available.

The amount of food you feed your animal should consider their exercise levels. Those who are not accustomed to a great deal of activity should not be fed as much as those who are continually on the go. Pay attention and follow the recommendations of your vet.

When you have a dog, it is your responsibility to take care of it. Proper feeding and exercise go hand in hand to provide a healthy life for your pet. You will feel good about taking the time to do it.
