Puppy Accident

Owning a new puppy is exciting. House training on the other hand, not so much. Chances are it is going to have an accident in your home. This can mean hours of area rug cleaning and removing the scent of urine. The following are some helpful tips to help clean up those messes.

Soak Up the Urine

The first thing to do when cleaning up a urine stain is to soak as much of it up. Place a thick layer of paper towels or an old bath towel on top of the stained area. Then place a heavy object, such as a brick or an exercise weight on top of the towel to help absorb as much of the moisture as possible. Remove the towels and repeat until there is not a lot of moisture left behind. Rinse the area with water and soak up the remaining liquid using the same method.

Clean the Area

After the moisture is completely removed, the next step is to clean the area. Depending on how long the stain has been on the carpet, there are two types of clean up methods. For newer stains, you can use a basic carpet cleaner and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Once you have applied the cleaner, use a pet odor neutralizer that can be found in pet stores to remove the smell.

For spots that have been set for a while, rent a steam cleaning machine or a commercial quality area rug cleaning machine. This will force the water through the fibers in order to completely remove the stained spot. Then follow up with the pet odor neutralizer.

Alternative Neutralizer Methods

In some instances, a pet odor neutralizer may not be enough to completely do the job. Other homeowners prefer to stay away from chemicals altogether in lieu of a more natural route.

A vinegar-based solution can be used to neutralize the urine odor. This neutralizes the ammonia in urine without damaging the fibers in the carpet. Simply mix one part white vinegar and one part water then apply it to the affected area. Let the liquid sit for 10 minutes, and then absorb it with paper towels. After the flooring is almost dry, spread baking soda on the floor. Let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then vacuum it up. This will help remove the urine smell using more natural products. Using common household products also allows you to save money and time.

Area rug cleaning after a dog accident isn't fun, but it is manageable. If the dog does not grow out of having accidents on the floor, consider a trip to the veterinarian to ensure there are no additional health problems.
